ORIENTATION IN THE US LEGAL SYSTEM FACULTY AND STAFF

Program Director

Professor Charles F. Abernathy

For the past ten years, the Orientation has been directed by Professor Charles F. Abernathy of the Georgetown University Law Center. A graduate of Harvard College and of Harvard Law School, Professor Abernathy was a co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center in 1971. He has written casebooks on civil rights and constitutional litigation and on the law of equal employment opportunity. His latest work is Law in the United States: Cases and Materials, the only survey of US law written in a casebook format, which also serves as the basic text for the Orientation. In addition to directing the Orientation, Professor Abernathy has been the director of Georgetown's program in Florence, Italy. In 1983 he was a Fulbright professor in Egypt, and has served as a consultant to the Department of State and the Senate Judiciary Committee.
