INTRODUCTION TO LEGAL ENGLISH AND WRITING
July 5-16, 2010

Now in its nineteenth year, Introduction to Legal English and Legal Writing is an intensive language course that provides a foundation in legal terminology and language use for individuals whose first language is not English. The program is intended for law students and professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of Anglo-American legal terminology before joining an LL.M program or returning to private practice. Many of our students choose to take Introduction to Legal English and Writing in combination with the Orientation in the US Legal System.

The seminar is an intensive and highly participatory course on Legal English, which improves the law practitioner’s and student’s command of legal English and describes the basic institutions of American common law and will improve the skill sets required for international legal practice.

This seminar combines a Workshop on Legal Research and Writing, engaging students in a process of active learning that improves the skill sets required to succeed in legal research and writing assignments in law school courses or in producing legal memos for law firms or American clients. The course emphasizes the use of plain language in both written and oral formats, the components of legal argument, and the reliance on judicial precedent in common law reasoning and statutory interpretation. As a course requirement, each student must work on a writing project. Particular emphasis will be given to effective research strategies, use of primary and secondary research materials, and professional legal writing.

Tuition fee: $1900 (discounts apply if attending both 2010 summer courses. See Application Process.)
