Known to generations of practitioners and scholars as the Whiteman Digest and long recognized as one of the most important publications in the international law community, the Digest ceased annual publication in the year 1989. Beginning with a volume covering the calendar year 2000, the International Law Institute brought the Digest back to yearly publication. Each annual volume of the Digest reports on fundamental topics covered by earlier editions as well as subjects that reflect new areas of jurisprudence in international law. As in the past, each volume is prepared by the Office of the Legal Adviser of the Department of State and covers important developments and state practice in all areas of public and private international law. In September 2006 the International Law Institute entered into a Co-Publishing Agreement with Oxford University Press. Under this agreement, the Office of the Legal Adviser will remain responsible for the content of the Digest but, for each new edition, starting with the edition for 2004, sales will be handled through OUP.
